Registering a company in Pakistan has become increasingly digital, allowing entrepreneurs to complete much of the incorporation process online.

For anyone starting a formal business in 2026, it is important to understand the difference between company registration through SECP and taxation through FBR.

Choose the Right Business Structure

Pakistan offers different ways to operate a business.

For companies registered through SECP, common structures include a single-member company and a private limited company.

SECP explains that a private company can be formed by two or more persons, while a private company with one member is treated as a single-member company.

The right structure depends on ownership, liability, future investment plans and how the business will operate.

Reserve the Company Name

The incorporation process starts with selecting and reserving an acceptable company name.

SECP’s current company-registration guidance describes name reservation and incorporation as part of its digitized process through eZfile.

Choose a name that reflects your business and complies with SECP naming requirements.

Prepare Company Information

You will typically need information about the proposed company, directors or subscribers, business activities and share capital.

Required documentation varies according to the company and ownership structure.

Foreign subscribers or directors may also need additional documentation or undertakings.

Submit the Incorporation Application

Pakistan’s company incorporation process is available online.

SECP describes the name-reservation and incorporation process as end-to-end digitized, with the current process organized into four main steps.

After approval, the company’s digitally signed certificate of incorporation can be provided electronically.

What About NTN?

Company incorporation and tax registration are closely connected.

SECP states that incorporation information is integrated with FBR so company data can be forwarded for NTN registration.

For broader tax registration, FBR explains that individuals, companies and associations of persons are treated as registered after e-enrollment through the Iris system. The Iris credentials are then used for online income-tax filing. Federal Board of Revenue

Registration Is Only the Beginning

After incorporation, businesses may have ongoing requirements depending on their structure and activities.

These can include:

annual company filings, income tax returns, wealth statements where applicable, sales tax requirements, provincial taxes and other compliance obligations.

Not every requirement applies to every business, so avoid assuming that registration automatically completes all future compliance.

Can Overseas Pakistanis or International Founders Apply?

Parts of the process can be completed digitally, and SECP specifically provides requirements relating to foreign subscribers, directors and shareholders.

The exact documents required will depend on the people involved and the proposed company structure.
